Anya Kamenetz Generation Debt

Anya Kamenetz

Anya Kamenetz is a 27-year-old journalist, author, and blogger. She is a staff writer at Fast Company magazine. In 2004, the Village Voice nominated her for a Pulitzer Prize in feature writing for her work on the series "Generation Debt: The New Economics of Being Young." Generation Debt is also the title of her first book.

Anya writes about the startling range of economic upheavals facing people in their 20s and 30s: soaring student loan and credit card debt; surfing an increasingly uncertain job market with stagnant wages but without health benefits or pension plans; fighting international competition; and facing the economic risks of baby boomers' retirement. She argues for young people to protect themselves through personal financial mastery and political savvy. At the same time, Anya is inspired by this generation's idealism, passion, networking genius, and commitment to work-life balance.

Anya has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, Fast Company, New York magazine, Salon, Slate, and The Nation on generational economics and politics. She has appeared on campuses from Miami to Kalamazoo, and on media outlets including PBS, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR, and Air America, speaking out about the economic issues faced by young people.

Now living in Brooklyn with her husband and cat, Anya grew up in both Baton Rouge and New Orleans, La. She recommends that you go and visit NOLA soon, hear the Rebirth Brass Band, and have a Bloody Mary with pickled okra and lots of Tabasco.

According to economics professor Laurence J. Kotlikoff, Generation Debt offers "a truly gripping account of how young Americans are being ground down by low wages, high taxes, huge student loans, sky-high housing prices, not to mention the impending retirement of their baby boomer parents."
